Health officials in Bangladesh say 14 people have died and hundreds more are ill with dengue fever in the capital, Dhaka.

New figures to be released officially on Monday show that more than 1,000 others have been treated in hospital since the outbreak early last month.

A health ministry official, Dr Nurul Islam, said most had been diagnosed with haemorrhagic dengue, the most fatal form of the mosquito-borne disease.

Doctors say the number of dengue infection cases has been on the rise in recent weeks, because it's the ideal breeding season for the mosquitoes.

The worst outbreak of dengue fever in Dhaka was reported in 2000, when 93 people died.
