Militants fighting Indian rule in Kashmir say they have closed down training camps in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on the orders of the Pakistan government.

Sources close to an alliance of several Kashmiri militant groups -- the United Jihad Council - - said cross-border infiltration into Indian-administered Kashmir had also stopped.

A BBC correspondent in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir says there is no independent confirmation of the claims and they are difficult to verify.

The US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, during his visit to India and Pakistan, said that the number of cross-border attacks had declined.

However Indian leaders told Mr Powell in no uncertain terms that Pakistan had reneged on its earlier promises to end infiltration.

The Pakistani president was adamant that infiltration had stopped and that Indian allegations were completely baseless.

The issue brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war earlier this year.
