India university closes

News image

The authorities in the north India state of Uttar Pradesh have closed the Aligarh Muslim University for an indefinite period.

The move follows unrest on the campus.

A statement from the vice-Chancellor, Mahummud Rahman, noted that medical students were on strike and described the law and order situation on the campus as having been bad for the last few weeks.

The state administration has deployed police and para military forces to maintain order.
