Police in the Jammu region say three people died and 12 others were injured when an explosive device was detonated in the main market in Rajouri town. It is not known who carried out the attack. In an earlier incident, seven people died when unidentified militants attacked a village in Udhampur district, some 150 kilometres north of the state's winter capital, Jammu, according to the police. The police said one of those killed was a child. The attack took place overnight. Four other people were seriously injured and were taken to Jammu for treatment. Senior police officers flew by helicopter to the site of the attack. Day of protest It is not yet clear who is behind the attack which comes hours before a protest rally by a Hindu hardline group. The hardline Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) is observing a "black day" on Monday in protest against an attack on a Hindu temple in Jammu 10 days ago. Eleven people were killed and 25 others injured when Muslim suicide bombers stormed the Raghunath temple packed with worshippers in Jammu. More than 35,000 people have died in more than a decade of fighting in Indian-administered Kashmir. India blames neighbouring Pakistan for arming and aiding the militants but Pakistan denies the charge, saying it only offers moral and diplomatic support. |
