In a statement, his private office said the Dalai Lama had been advised to take a complete rest, and would not now carry out planned visits to Europe, the United States and Canada in March and April.
He fell ill during a visit to the Indian state of Bihar, where he had been due to take part in Buddhism's largest festival, the Kalchakra (Wheel of Time) at Bodhgaya. Doctors said he recovered well but advised him to rest. His private secretary, Ngawang Gyaltsen, said: "His Holiness is feeling much better, but his doctors have recommended complete rest during his convalescence." Indian exile China seized control of Tibet in 1950 - a move it describes as "peaceful liberation" and the Tibetan government-in-exile says was invasion. The Dalai Lama fled Tibet with thousands of supporters in 1959, following a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He heads the government-in-exile in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent struggle against Chinese rule. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top South Asia stories now: Links to more South Asia stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
