| Tuesday, 8 January, 2002, 22:49 GMT More politicians charged in Bangladesh ![]() Corruption is said to be rife in Bangladesh By the BBC's Kaushik Das in Dhaka More corruption cases have been filed in Bangladesh against former ministers and leaders of the main opposition Awami League party. The country's Anti-Corruption Bureau has this time named three former ministers - Mohammad Nasim, Amir Hossain Amu and Rafiq-ul-Islam. Six separate cases of misuse of power and embezzlement had been filed against them. The Bureau is already investigating the former prime minister and Awami League leader, Sheikh Hasina, many of her former cabinet colleagues and senior officials. The Awami League has described the charges as baseless and motivated by vindictiveness. Corruption rife Incoming governments in Bangladesh have often blamed their political rivals of corruption.
Sheikh Hasina's government filed corruption cases against the then opposition leader, Khaleda Zia, a few years ago. Another former ruler, General H M Ershad, was charged with corruption by Mrs Zia's previous government in the early 1990s. The Berlin-based Transparency International says corruption is endemic in Bangladesh. The group branded Bangladesh as the most corrupt country in the world last year.
