Seventy-seven-year old Mr Chaddha died at his home in Delhi on Tuesday night, according to the Press Trust of India. A non-resident businessman, Mr Chaddha was alleged to have taken bribes from the Swedish firm Bofors to clinch a multi-million dollar artillery contract for the Indian Army in 1986. He worked at one time as an agent for the Swedish company in India. Denied charges Mr Chaddha, who denied the charges against him, was extradited to India from the United Arab Emirate last year to face trial.
Former Defence Secretary SK Bhatnagar died earlier this year. Others alleged to be involved in the affair include the billionaire Hinduja brothers, who had to go to India at the beginning of the year to face questioning. Two of the three brothers have subsequently been allowed to return to the UK, where they are based. The main political figure implicated in the scandal was former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991. The affair was largely blamed for the defeat of his Congress party in 1989 elections. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top South Asia stories now: Links to more South Asia stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
