| Wednesday, 22 August, 2001, 07:40 GMT 08:40 UK 2,000 arrested in Bihar strike The authorities in Bihar in eastern India say up to 2,000 supporters of India's ruling National Democratic Alliance have been arrested after a strike turned violent. Rioters attacked cars and buses in the capital, Patna. The strike was called in protest at the alleged failure of the Rashtriya Janata Dal state government to provide relief for flood and drought victims. The strikers were also angered by the shooting dead by police of four people at Aurai in Muzaffarpur district. The one-day strike, which shut down shops, schools and offices, was dismissed by the state government as an attempt by the NDA to divert attention from its own failures and scandals.
