Dhaka soccer violence leaves 20 injured

At least 20 people were injured in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka when football supporters clashed with police in some of the worst soccer-related violence ever seen in the country.

Police said the fans were annoyed by a referee's decision in a first division football match.

They went on the rampage, torching seats in Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium and damaging cars in the nearby streets as they left the stadium.

The trouble began when the referee refused to give a penalty in the match between Rahmatganj and Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club, one of the most popular clubs in Bangladesh.

The match was about to end at the time, with the score level at 1-1.

Police used tear gas and baton charged the unruly crowd.

They arrested three people. The match was abandoned.
