Bangladesh's risky waterways
Damaged ferry
There have been 250 ferry accidents since 1977
By South Asia analyst Kamal Ahmed

Bangladesh's worst ever ferry accident has added pressure upon the authorities to improve safety in the shipping sector.

According to the official statistics, there have been about 250 ferry accidents in Bangladesh since 1977.

These have resulted in more than 2,000 deaths.

The latest sinking is typical of many accidents, taking place during the holiday rush at the end of the year.

Boats
An important form of transport
The accident happened in what is believed to be one of the riskiest river channels in the country, an area where accidents occur regularly.

However, the channel remains one of the most important communication links between southern Bangladesh and Dhaka.

Poor safety

Most of the boats that use this route are constructed in local shipyards, and are often built below international maritime standards.

Experts say that the reason for the high casualty figures on such vessels are due to a combination of poor manufacturing techniques and the failure of the boat owners to implement adequate safety precautions.

The experts point that although the provision of lifejackets or emergency rings is mandatory, the rule has rarely been enforced.

Experts also say that many crews and captains lack proper navigation training.

They say that the employment of an unskilled workforce in the industry is widespread.

Officials at the Shipping Ministry say that they have devised tougher regulations for improving the safety standard, but that the problem is one enforcement rather than legislation.
