Police in the northeastern Indian state of Assam say separatist Bodo rebels have shot dead a tea estate manager.

Police say that about ten rebels from the banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland surrounded the tea official Juinsuma Basumatary while he was inspecting a tea garden and fired several rounds at him.

Police say that in recent years at least two officials from the same tea estate have been kidnapped by the rebel group and then been released after large ransom payments.

The NDFB has been fighting for a separate homeland for the tribal Bodo people for seven years.
