| Wednesday, 1 November, 2000, 17:48 GMT Kuwait lifts Bangladesh labour ban ![]() More than 200,000 Bangladeshis work in Kuwait Kuwait has agreed to lift its ban on the recruitment of labour from Bangladesh. The decision was taken during the three-day visit to Kuwait by Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which ended on Wednesday. Sheikh Hasina said Kuwait had imposed a "freeze" on Bangladeshi labour, which would be removed following the signing of a technical agreement between the two countries. Kuwait has refused to allow in Bangladeshi workers since 1999, apparently because a Bangladeshi worker strangled his 90-year-old employer, stole his money and fled home.
Bangladesh and Kuwait do not have an extradition treaty, but discussions on such a treaty were held during Sheikh Hasina's visit. The Bangladeshi Prime Minister arrived in Kuwait on Monday and met the emir, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmed Al Sabah, and the country's prime minister and foreign minister. She also addressed representatives of Kuwait's 200,000-strong Bangladeshi community apart from visiting Bangladeshi troops stationed in Kuwait. Nearly 5,000 Bangladeshi troops have been deployed for mine-clearing and other missions in Kuwait since the 1991 Gulf War. |
