Neil Armstrong on the end of the space race

Forty years ago millions of people crowded round radios and television sets to witness the first time man set foot on the Moon.

The Apollo 11 mission was a major victory for the US over Russia in the race to conquer space.

Speaking at the John H Glenn Lecture for 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11, the first man on the Moon, Neil Armstrong, said the lunar landing helped to create ''co-operation between former adversaries'' and hastened the end of the space race.
