An Ariane 5 rocket carrying Europe's Herschel and Planck space telescopes has blasted off from Kourou in French Guiana.
Elsewhere in space, astronauts from Nasa's Atlantis shuttle have carried out their fist spacewalk on their mission to repair and upgrade the Hubble telescope.
