Deep-sea shrimp caught on camera

Scientists have captured a number of deep-sea shrimps species (Mirocaris fortunata, Chorocaris chacei and Rimicaris exoculata) around a hydrothermal vent and brought them to the surface.

A new device called a Periscop kept the animals at their natural pressure, preventing decompression, as they were pulled up through the water.

This enabled the team to study the creatures' behaviour easily.

In comparison, shrimps pulled up through the water without pressure, jerked violently and died within a few hours.
