The fossil find in the north of the island provides further evidence that modern birds are descended from carnivorous flying dinosaurs. Called Rahona Ostromi, the raven-sized bird lived at the end of the dinosaur era.
Like birds, Rahona had feathers and a reversed thumb allowing it to perch in trees. But it also shared features, such as a slashing claw, with velociraptors, the flying killers immortalised in Jurassic park. The weaponry would have made it a fearsome predator to anything smaller than itself. But like the modern duck-billed platypus Rahona was a creature out of time even during its heyday. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Sci/Tech stories now: Links to more Sci/Tech stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||
