School Reporters Sarah, Thea and Mhairaid from Taylor High School were part of the accredited press team reporting pitch side at the opening ceremony of the 45th International Children's Games hosted by Lanarkshire in Scotland
1300 competitors and coaches, along with administrators and delegates are involved in the 2011 International Children's Games. The opening ceremony was held at Fir Park in Motherwell and many of the young people and teams taking part in the Games attended
Competitors from the host team waved the Scottish flag proudly as they paraded at the ICG opening ceremony! Team Lanarkshire includes 80 athletes, 12 coaches, a Team Manager and two assistants
School Reporters said the opening ceremony "brought an abundance of colour and noise to rainy Lanarkshire. There was a wide display of music and dancing ranging from traditional music and Highland dance to more contemporary Scottish rock."
This is the team from San Luis Potosi, Mexico proudly being introduced to the crowd at the ICG opening ceremony on 4th August. The event was attended by competitors and their families, sponsors, coaches, organising bodies and youth organisations.
A team from Germany wore national costume at the opening ceremony. The 2011 International Children's Games has competitors representing 77 cities from 33 countries worldwide, including Switzerland, Ukraine, South Korea, India and the host country, Scotland
Sarah, Thea and Mhairaid interviewed some of the competitors involved and watching the opening ceremony. Thea said "I was standing wishing I was involved in the Games and then I realised I was thanks to the BBC and reporting for School Report!"
Thea also spoke to Ioannis Papagiannopoulas who is the head of delegation from Pratras, Greece. He said he thinks Scotland is a lovely country, he couldn't believe all the green vegetation of the countryside
The School Reporters also spoke to some of the young Greek competitors, including Ranagions who is a swimmer and Despoina who runs in their athletics team. Neither had visited Scotland before and both said they were keen for the competition to start
