Today was a chance for young people to try new sports like badminton and basketball. The park was filled with schools from all over London, creating a buzzing atmosphere in and around the stadium. As a trial event for next year's School Games (hosted by the London Youth Games) seven boroughs of London joined the games today competing in events such as volleyball, athletics, badminton and tennis. The range of athletes and MPs present included Gail Emms, David Weir and Jeremy Hunt. Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary for Culture, Media and Sport said "everyone [will] feel the magic of the Olympics" at the Youth Games today. Ella Rose and Kya did some track side reporting at Crystal Palace stadium. |
We also caught up with David Weir, a multi medal-winning Paralympian who said the games will be a "stepping stone in [young people's] careers, a great opportunity for London". Both Mr Hunt and Mr Weir are optimistic at the success of the 2012 London Olympics. Mr Hunt has even challenged his wife to a bet - that the London Olympics will top Beijing.
