School Reporters learned vital first aid skills

School reporters in Hampshire have been investigating the lack of first aid training in schools.

Pupils at the Vyne Community School conducted a survey of pupils in years seven, eight and nine and found that 86% of students aged between 12 and 14 have never been taught first aid in school.

First aid is not a compulsory lesson on the curriculum and the report suggests that 17% of teenagers don't even know how to treat a minor cut, let alone how to treat someone who is unconscious.

Their aim is to push the government to put first aid on the syllabus.

'Make a difference'

The young journalists invited Lorrin Evans, from St John Ambulance to the school. He showed them some essential first aid and said: "We want every child and young person in the country to have access to first aid training'.

Lucas, 14, who is presenting the findings for School Report, told us "I've really enjoyed it and if things go to plan then this report could really make a difference".
