Sixty Year 8 pupils from Brentside High School in Ealing took part in December's practice News Day. This - the fourth year the school has taken part - will see 250 students undergo School Report training.
Kvarne, 12, has been looking at carbon emissions and Martina, 12, said: "It was really good to find out the positive points of global warming too."
Other issues being looked at include the effects of the credit crunch at Christmas time and teenage life, especially the way young people are stereotyped.
Another group have been looking at knife crime. Kieren and Khalid, both 12, said they found it really interesting and learnt that if you are caught carrying a knife you can spend up to 25 years in prison.
One group have been learning about the positive and negative affects of global warming which they found really interesting. "I learnt that by 2025 the earth's temperature will have increased by two degrees," said Yasmine, 13.
The pupils began the day by checking the internet for headlines and story ideas. After researching their topics, they wrote scripts and, with a little help from a cameraman, filmed their items.
All the pupils are enjoying the day, especially the filming. "It's really good, but nerve-wracking as we had to pretend to be news readers," said Zoe, 12.
All the groups will be filming their content either in the school's studio, which has been set up especially for the occasion, or at the local City Learning Centre in Ealing.
