Safety fears have forced the EU to withdraw its election observers from Sudan's western region of Darfur - just days before voting is due to start.
The election is key to sustaining the peace deal of 2005, which ended more than two decades of civil war. But the violence goes on, and opposition parties are calling the polls in Darfur a farce.
