A shot fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, 150 years ago plunged the United States into civil war but today there is still disagreement over what led the 11 Southern states to secede from the Union and spark the deadly battles which followed.
The BBC's Paul Adams went to Charleston to find out how a city that was the center of the conflict commemorates an event like this.
