| Tycoon found guilty Judge considering life sentence for Hoogstraten One of Britain's wealthiest property tycoons, Nicholas van Hoogstraten, has been found guilty of the manslaughter of a business associate. He hired two hitmen to kill on Mohammed Raja after they fell out over property. But although he wanted Mr Raja harmed, he had not wanted him murdered, the jury decided, after eight days of deliberation. The panel of six men and six women returned a verdict of not guilty to murder but guilty of manslaughter, by a majority of 11-1. Mr Raja was stabbed and shot at point-blank range at his home in Sutton, south London, on July 2, 1999. Mr Justice Newman, said that van Hoogstraten faced a life-sentence though he would allow time for him to consult his lawyers about whether he wanted the case to be adjourned for psychiatric reports. Our Home Affairs correspondent Jane Peel reports live from the Old Bailey and reports on the background to the case. Tory Chairman in the hot seat There's speculation at Westminster that Iain Duncan Smith is coming under pressure to replace the Tory party chairman, David Davis MP. David Davis is being criticised on three counts - that he's on holiday, he's not keen on modernising and that he still has his eye on the top job. The World at One asks the Sunday Telegraph's Political Editor, Matthew D'Ancona, which is the most serious charge. Roger Gale MP, Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party, is one of Mr Davis's closest supporters. He tells us the chairman himself is keen to modernise the party, and fully backs his leader. Sanctions against Zimbabwe The Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw MP, is in Brussels today to discuss sanctions against Zimbabwe. Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, the vice-chair of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee tells the World at One that sanctions need to be tougher. |
