More money, much more money is essential to ensure the future of the Health Service. So Derek Wanless, author of a new report into NHS funding sponsored by the Chancellor, has told the World at One.

Just hours before Gordon Brown is expected to announce a massive Budget cash injection into the Health Service, Mr Wanless said NHS spending will have to more than double by 2022. That means a rise to �184 billion a year from �68 billion a year now.

The former Chief Executive of NatWest said the NHS has suffered years of under investment making it difficult to catch up with the services offered by other industralised countries. He outlined three different scenairos for the future of the Health Service.

Later Shadow Health Secretary, Dr Liam Fox MP, told the programme his party had big questions about the Wanless Report. Dr Fox said the report was to give cover to Chancellor Gordon Brown's expected tax rises this afternoon.
