We visited a number of businesses around the country, all of which have turned great designs into commercial success.

Newlands Scientific

Newlands Scientific was originally formed as a commercial off-shoot of Hull University.

A group of leading academics in the field of magnetic technology realised they could turn their skills and knowledge into commercial success.

The result is the sound bug, a device which uses "smart" metals to turn any hard, flat surface into a speaker.

The product is now selling well around the world, especially in the youth market.

Baby Dux

Cheshire-based firm Baby Dux design and manufacture innovative safety baby products.

Vivian Dux established the firm after she was made redundant from her previous job.

She had the idea of developing a device that would make bathing babies safer. The product she designed has a temperature guage to ensure the water is not too hot, and enables easier handling of the child.

Mothercare is now stocking the product, and Vivian has more designs and ideas in the pipeline.

Professional Design Group (PDG)

Nottingham based PDG is effectively a collection of designers and inventors.

They're hired by firms to come up with solutions to problems in a wide range of fields. For example, they're currently creating prototype device which detects cracks and faults in fuselage and buildings.

Another invention is the 'Informer' - a small anti-theft product which sits on mobile phones and alerts the owner when the phone is moved.

Gecko Safety Headgear

Gecko is based in the Cornish town of Bude, and was originally established by a group of friends as a surf-board manufacturer.

The company now specialises in making safety helmets for coastguards and lifeboatmen around the world.

The firm has invented a special carbon-fibre helmets in such a way that they retain heat, and they're constantly striving to come up woth better designs.

Computer Gym

This Surrey based firm describes itself as a mobile learning centre company.

In effect they provide local governments, schools and companies with vehicles that are specially designed to provide IT facilities and training. I

nside each vehicle is a wealth of computer equipment, and two trainers.

The "look" of each mobile learning centre appeals to both young and old.

The firm now operates in four different countries.
