| Boston boost ![]() Boston United are the newest member of the Nationwide League It must have been quite an event. Everywhere you look in Boston there are posters congratulating the town's team on promotion to the Nationwide League. And it was certainly more than a Boston tea party - at the football ground itself we found an empty magnum bottle of champagne still lying in a dustbin on the terraces. Boston United have just become the newest member of the Nationwide League after clinching promotion from the Conference. And despite the problems every team in the football league faces with the collapse of ITV Digital , the fans were in a mood to celebrate. But will they be left with a financial hangover? Debt The club has spent most of the season deep in debt; it's now moving into a bigger league where it's bound to face demands for higher wages from its players and of course, the television money has run out. But manager Steve Evans is unperturbed. "We never budgeted for promotion to the League so we reckon we'll be 200,000 better off." He also says an agreed takeover of the club which will be completed in time for next season should resolve the debt problem. But Steve acknowledges many clubs will suffer. "It's the ones who've budgeted for that money who will be in trouble." Bear the brunt In particular it will be the footballers themselves who will bear the brunt and have to face cuts in their wages. Like any other business though, there will still be those who profit from the problems of their competitors. Steve predicts clubs which can find the cash will be able to move in and pick up bargains as teams look to offload players to balance the books. But there's another side to football too; the fans and the community they come from. For Boston United, promotion to the Nationwide puts them on the map. Many people in Boston believe it will do the same thing for the town. Councillor Ernie Napier, in charge of tourism for Boston Borough Council was clutching his first inquiry, from a Swansea City fan. He wanted Boston's tourist promotion brochure and was looking forward to visiting the town with his family next season. Confidence "We often feel forgotten in this part of Lincolnshire," he told me. "We've had quite a lot of companies and utilities move out of Boston over the years, maybe this will give the town something to offer them and give us the confidence to draw people back." Putting Boston on the map is a phrase you hear repeatedly in the town and you can't put an economic price on that kind of boost to self confidence. It's an illustration from the unfashionable corner of soccer of a point we often make when looking at the roller coaster share prices of the more glamorous clubs; football really isn't just like any other business. |
