From his headquarters in New York , US financier Bernard Madoff masterminded a fraud that netted billions of dollars and ensnared thousands from Palm Beach billionaires and Hollywood movie stars to pensioners across the US. He will be sentenced on 29 June and could be jailed for up to 150 years. | The Madoff Hustle Sunday, 28 June, 2009 1900 BST on BBC Two |
But Madoff's scam did not end in America - he went global in his search for victims. In the UK, William Foxton OBE, a distinguished soldier and peacekeeper, was one of those whose lives Madoff destroyed. Major Foxton killed himself in a Southampton park in February, after losing his life savings. Angered by his father's death, Willard Foxton has embarked on a personal investigation into the Madoff fraud and the devastation it has wrought. On a 14,000 mile journey that takes him to New York, Florida and California, Willard meets fellow Madoff victims - two former employees and a Madoff family friend, who has known him for over 50 years. As his investigation progresses, Willard tries to discover what happened to his father's money and gains an insight into how Madoff ran the world's biggest scam, and how he managed to go undetected for so long. This World will be broadcast on Sunday 28 June at 1900 BST on BBC Two. Producer: Roger Corke Executive producers: Lucy Hetherington and Fiona Stourton
