This World reveals first-hand accounts from monks and students who fled for their lives after Burma's most recent uprising.

In September 2007, Burma's population rose up against their military rulers. Civilians joined pro-democracy demonstrations by Buddhist monks across the country.

Then the military cracked down. The army took to the streets, monasteries were raided and homes of suspected dissidents were subjected to night time raids. Some escaped, thousands were detained, and hundreds were allegedly killed.

Blow-by-blow accounts

This World follows a group of men - two of them monks - who were either thrown together on the streets of Rangoon, or as they tried to escape.

Now they are waiting - lost in limbo - across the border in Thailand, too afraid to show themselves yet unwilling to give up the battle just yet. They live in constant fear of police harassment and Burmese intelligence agents.

The programme gives blow-by-blow accounts from bloggers, monks, student leaders and protest organizers. Their voices tell the incredible story of Burma's hope and despair.
