Speechmaking is one of the oldest - and most important - political skills In a new series of the Sunday Supplement, the writer and former Parliamentary sketchwriter Edward Pearce looks back over three centuries of speechmaking by members of both Lords and Commons.
The series opens with these examples of contemporary speechmaking - in Neil Kinnock's case, of the hoarser kind.
In part two, Edward Pearce contrasts the speechmaking of the 18th Century with that of the high Victorian age, when the Liberal leader William Gladstone connected with a mass audience - with a new and different kind of rhetoric.
