An exclusive survey of Labour Party constituency chairmen and women for the BBC2's Daily Politics programme and Radio 4's World at One has found that over half of those who responded believe that Gordon Brown should move the Labour party closer to the trade unions and away from big business.

The survey also found that, of those who responded:

  • Two thirds believe Gordon Brown is wrong to encourage more private involvement in health and education
  • One quarter think Gordon Brown should have called a General Election last autumn
  • Three quarters say they back Gordon Brown to lead Labour into the next election, while a quarter believe he is not the right person or are unsure.

135 local party chairmen and women took part in the survey, out of a total of 352 Labour-held parliamentary seats. Fieldwork was conducted between 16th and 20th June, 2008.
