The Conservative MP Claire Perry said it was very hard for a single mother to go out to work because she would lose benefits.

But the judge and author Constance Briscoe said Britain had a "something for nothing" attitude and spent far too much time subsidising those who do not want to work.

Earlier this week a survey suggested that the number of people who thought benefits for the unemployed were too high had gone up from 35% to 54%.
