Blaenau Gwent
Blaenau Gwent: some of the voters seem to be punch-drunk

In less than two week's time, the people of Blaenau Gwent go to the polls for two crucial by-elections.

Both seats - one Assembly, the other Parliamentary - are vacant due to the death of rebel Independent AM and MP, Peter Law.

At the 2005 General Election, former Labour stalwart Peter Law stood in this Socialist heartland and stunned the political world by beating the Labour candidate, Maggie Jones.

Now, the race to succeed Peter Law is hotting up ... and the stakes could not be any higher.

Make or break

If Labour win back the seat, then it has a workable majority in the Assembly; if it doesn't then Rhodri Morgan will be faced with the difficult prospect of minority government.

This Sunday, BBC Wales Politics Show brings the Assembly candidates together for a major debate.

Live from the Assembly, Adrian Masters interviews the five main candidates:

  • Liberal Democrat Steve Bard
  • Plaid Cymru's John Price
  • Independent candidate Trish Law
  • John Hopkins from Labour Party
  • and Jon Burns from the Conservatives

Who will have it in them to win over the people of Blaenau Gwent?

Join Adrian Masters and the five Assembly candidates this Sunday on the Politics Show.
