South East: Call your MP
Emma Wakefield
The Politics Show South East

Big Ben
Westminster is the seat of political power

In the studio this week we have a combination of local MPs and MEPs representing the three main parties.

They are there to answer your questions about anything that worries or concerns you about life in the South East.

Greg Barker MP for Bexhill & Battle (Conservative)

Greg Barker became the MP for Bexhill and Battle in June 2001.

He is an active constituency MP who has also served in the Territorial Army and in 2003 completed the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme.

Greg has been a member of the Environmental Audit Select Committee since 2001 and in November 2003 was appointed to the Opposition Front Bench as a Conservative Whip.

Greg resigned as Treasury Whip in July this year to work on David Cameron MP's leadership campaign.

In his constituency Greg has championed a number of local issues including transport, anti-social behaviour, NHS funding, back British farming, phone masts and wormerys!

In the House he has spoken about regional funding issues including the Conservative claim that Labour continues to "under fund local authorities in the South East in order to divert tax payer's money to their own political heartlands."

Laura Moffat MP for Crawley (Labour)

Laura Moffat was elected MP for Crawley in 1997 following 12 years as a member of Crawley Borough Council and a year (1990-91) as Mayor of Crawley.

Laura was educated in Crawley and trained there as a nurse, a job she left only to serve the local people as their MP.

She continues to be active in health related issues both in the House and the local area.

At Westminster she is a member of a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups including Mental Health, Drug Misuse, Homelessness and Town Centre Management.

She has kept her links with the local hospital as President of the Hospital League of Friends and is also linked to the Samaritans, Relate and the Access Group for Crawley.

Laura describes her proudest achievement in Parliament since 2001 as; "The recent success I have had in securing the inclusion in the Health and Safety Blue Book, of specific guidance on needle stick injury."

She enjoys reading, swimming, walking and caravanning and is pictured on her Home Page with two of her Guinea Pigs.

Sharon Bowles MEP for the South East (Liberal Democrat)

Sharon Bowles became a member of the European Parliament in May 2005, replacing Chris Huhne who stood down following his election in Eastleigh in the 2005 General Election.

Sharon has been one of the Liberal Democrat's high profile European campaigners and policy makers over 15 years and has served on a number of policy groups on topics including science, genetic engineering and civil liberties.

She has also led Conference debates on Health, Education and small business.

Sharon is a qualified European Patent Attorney and speaks two European languages.

In her free time she enjoys classical music, rowing, cricket and dance.
