Your views What nonsense! Any new build reactors will store the used fuel on site during the total lifetime so no transportation is required. Sellafield will have closed long before the next generation of reactors will be closing.
Robbie Gregg, United Kingdom
Greenpeace miss the point. The danger of nuclear power is not transporting the waste - the containers are designed to withstand nearly everything short of a nuclear attack. The danger is that from conception to completion on a nuclear power plant takes about 15 years.
Therefore, none of our power will be from new nuclear stations for another 15 years, and this is the period of time when greenhouse emissions will become critical to the future of the planet. By the time they're built, the damage will be done. The solution is renewables and energy conservation. They are immediately implement able.
Leo Jofeh, United Kingdom
In the midst of the debate about new nuclear power stations versus renewable energy it was interesting to note that last Thursday evening a Horizon documentary was trying to persuade us that exposure to radiation isn't nearly as dangerous as previously thought. A coincidence? Or something else?
Penelope Moulder, UK
The only realistic way of providing energy is nuclear power and it is perfectly safe. We have to remember that nuclear radioactive material was in existence beforehand and we can not do much about it. But if we do not use nuclear power than the lights will go off and there will be completely chaos. Charlotte, Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire
I am totally against any nuclear power. If we really pull the finger out, we could get down to having green policy with energy savings, renewables, etc. Nuclear power is just a quick fix because the government is panicking. It is a terrible policy and the country should pull back from it. I would rather just have my candles than use nuclear power. Anna, Ludlow
What is the point of us having nuclear power and be greener when other countries, like China and America do not care about nuclear waste or any pollution at all! Jane, Shropshire
I have never heard when the discussion on nuclear power comes on what does France do with their nuclear waste? They are surely the biggest users of nuclear power and I want to know what they do with their nuclear waste?
And when it comes to saving energy in Britain it seems to me that both industry and government could do far more to save energy by switching off all the lights in offices as at the moment they are left on every night. Mrs Suckling, Bidford on Avon
I think that nuclear power is the only answer to our shortage of electricity. At the moment we do not have any other solutions. Ray, Cleobury Mortimer
Why is the government spending billions on thinking about nuclear fuel when the high division fuel is round the corner? If you can run a car engine on high division fuel, you can run power station to generate electricity the same way. Why don't the British scientists work on high division instead of nuclear power? Mr Bull, Wolverhampton
I believe in the 21st century we have technology to make nuclear energy safe. We must! It might be the only thing that is left. Anonymous, West Midlands
I am very worried what we are going to do with the nuclear waste. I will not agree with nuclear power until I know what will happen to the nuclear waste. Fiona, Shrewsbury
Transporting the waste is not solving the problem. The nuclear waste is still there contaminating the earth. We should think about our children and future generations. What kind of environment they will live in if we don't care about the contamination now. Lucy, West Midlands
