Thought the investigation was one of the best I've seen in a long time. Makes a change to see someone like your reporter. Powerful programme. If the appeal goes ahead next week and the man is freed you should take some credit.

Brilliant journalism. Fresh reporter. Like it Panorama. Keep it up.

Good to see the BBC finally investigating this gross miscarriage of justice. Channel 4 broadcast a programme questioning the verdict many years ago. The key thing that convinced me of Barry George's innocence was the prosecution's case that he had re-activated a de-commissioned pistol in his bedroom, which can only be done by a skilled gunsmith with specialist tools. The problem with this is that his local bike shop said George was unable to fix a puncture. No doubt George was weird and had a low IQ, but everyone who knew him said he was incapable of carrying out such a professional killing. The prosecution team are the ones who should be behind bars, and Jill's killer is still out there.

I find it hard to fathom what your reporter was on about. In 2001 the particle evidence was perfectly admissible, but now all of a sudden, because of an obscure report it's not! According to your programme anybody walking around could have gunshot residue on their clothing, I think not somehow!
It also appears from your report that Barry George has lots of previous ie incidents the Police reports & allegations against him.
Speaking as an ex Metropolitan Police officer who left the service in 1999, you also mentioned his mental capacity, obviously his mental state & fitness to be detained would be assessed upon his initial arrest and in this process he would have been examined by the Force Medical Examiner (FME) I could go on and on, but what's the point as you will more than likely totally ignore this email as it's not politically correct.

Why has it taken 7 years for someone in authority to get others in authority via Panorama to come to a consensus of opinion that Barry George was always innocent he was fitted up as with other victims of miscarriage of justice simply because he fulfilled the book as Bob Marley would say! He's of low mental ability harmless susceptible to suggestion also bullying was clearly always vulnerable he was cannon fodder it's a disgrace that it took 7 years but thank god for Panorama!!!!!!

i am afraid i only caught the tail end of tonight's programme, but as i remember the case when it arose following the murder, i heard no evidence that would convict Barry George despite the vast coverage dedicated to the trial at the time. Unfortunately when such a programme is aired for public consumption and fails to 'effect change' not only in this, but in every other unclear case, then it serves only as a Public Information Film serving to inform the public of the routine injustices that await them. Along with other highly publicised crimes against the public such as the deplorable Shaking Baby Death mothers episodes, it helps to promote distrust in others and an eagerness not to support worthy causes for fear of similar persecution.

Evidence?
How could one particle convict a man, easy the police had to lean on the forensic scientist who then made the particle more than what it was. This is common practice within the court system especially at The Old Bailey some Judges except it others don't. Tax payers money are being abused on cases where there is no evidence with weak forensic reports that are bolstered to get the case to trial. Prosecutors then speak fancy words to impress the jury who are at times lost and confused....And hey there's a bad guy in the dock so the police say and he's surrounded by loads of guards so it must be him... must it? Well the judge summed up in the prosecution favour!...... Not so easy!
Why does our so called Justice system allow this to happen? Ok there may of been a case to answer but a Judge with common sense knows a single particle is at the bottom end of the scale, so why was this evidence relied on? Alas without this particle there was no case to answer. Its as easy as this the jury where hoodwinked into believing the prosecutions jargon!
Bring all these shady cases to light and release the innocent back to their families! True Justice Will Prevail!
