One can't help but pity the individuals we see in such programmes but can this same pity be offered to absolutely all people, indeed millions, who want to leave Africa, the Middle East, and Asia for a better life in Britain?
Barrie Redfern, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

One question that the researcher didn't ask them was why do they all want to come to the UK? It certainly isn't for the weather. Could it be that we are such a soft touch compared to every other Country that they all see it as easy. The time has come to say sorry there is no more room we are full.
Lee Marsden, UK

I am shocked at the lack of compassion, the heartlessness and the sheer ignorance of some of the comments made in response to the programme Destination Europe. I have the privilege to work with women asylums seekers and know that we really do not understand the desperation and heartbreak and trauma many asylum seekers endure. Scratch beneath the surface of anyone in Europe and there is a refugee from somewhere and something. We will pay for our cold blooded heartlessness. These are individual human beings who want nothing more than the same as the rest of us. We really are in trouble here - because our attitude and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers in particular will come home to roost. The earth belongs to all of us.
Ruth MacNeely, Castlebar, Co Mayo, Ireland

The Italian and Spanish Navy should be protecting Europe's borders, but they are doing the exact opposite. They are encouraging illegal immigration by giving free boat rides to the illegal immigrants. The illegals only have to go halfway and then the Italian/Spanish navy will kindly pick them up and escort them to the EU. Even worse is that the Spanish and Italian governments are then giving illegals free plane tickets to the European mainland! Is it any wonder that these routes are so popular? Italy and Spain are of course hoping that the illegals will not stay and will move onto Britain. The British government should therefore sue the Spanish and Italian governments for every illegal that enters the UK via Spain and Italy. It is the UK that has to foot the bill and provide all the free housing for these people on our overcrowded island. The Spanish and Italians are just passing the buck, they should be held accountable for their illegal immigration encouraging actions.
Al, Britain

Usual British nonsense about everyone wanting to go to Britain, foreigners not doing anything etc. There was no suggestion in the show of all of the migrants wanting to come to Britain, also the Spanish & Italian navies do not give lifts to migrants to EU! Actually do some research and you will see Britain is in the middle of the EU league table for immigration, not the top! As for foreigners not doing anything it is Britain that refused to contribute anything at all to Frontex (do some research to find out what that is), then tried to take the EU to court to get the benefits of it! Willing to bet this comment doesnt make it to the forum! Get your facts right, little Englanders.
Leland Cortez, Nucia,Spain

Western governments are happy for billions in stolen funds to migrate to western bank accounts. Their support for past and current regimes that abuse the goodwill of their people is not secret. The same people are readily given asylum and received with open arms in the west. I say what goes around comes around. It is time the west took responsibility and stopped mourning when the victims of bungled foreign policies come knocking on theirs.
Brezhnev, Kenya

The shipping routes used by these criminals should be mined. These people show contempt for our laws and if caught and identified, these criminals should be debarred from ever entering the EU.
Drew Edgar, Stratford, England

If these people are desperate enough to pay people traffickers to get to Europe in poor conditions they are also desperate enough to lie about their asylum/refugee status and where they came from. Who will know? Our nice country is being destroyed by the effects of immigration and we are helping people traffickers to profit by accepting so many immigrants. We should not allow in any more asylum seekers, refugees or others and make it clear that the UK is FULL and WILL DEPORT anyone who should not be here. We also need to act on this with armed force and NOT just talk the talk.
Kevin Herbert, Greater Manchester

I've been following the many stories about migration to Europe via the perilous journey by sea from Africa to Europe. All the stories are very sad, and as an African, I am saddened by the desperation that my people feel. And, as an African living in the West (legal immigrant, by the way), I know that the life they're longing for in Europe is something that they will not find. There are so many issues here. While I understand the sentiments that several writers on this website have expressed about wanting to keep their British culture and lifestyle in tact by refusing to accept such migrants, I am disappointed at the lack of compassion expressed by several of these same writers. Where is your sense of human compassion? More than this, you choose to ignore the fact that some of the reasons for diminishing economic returns in Africa is because of an unfair economic system that has been set up for the advantage of the West. Corruption is not the only reason behind Africa's poverty. A little research may teach you something. Stopping the migration problem has many, many layers to it. Finding a solution is not just about patrolling the seas. We, as a human race, need to examine ourselves and see how we're contributing to the underdevelopment of the countries of the South. More than examine ourselves, we need to stop indulging in all the things that an unfair global system buys for us in the West and then condemning those that simply want what we have.
Eve Kyomya-Fluker, Dallas, Texas, U.S.A.

What a sad sad programme last night's Panorama was - but how well it was researched - I am full of praise for the insightful reporting of the tales of the piteous migrants. The programme deserves a medal for showing us here in a prosperous Britain just what lengths African peoples are prepared to go to get a better life. I have seen the poverty in Senegal and also seen the long fishing boats miles and miles out at sea to fish for the luxuries we buy in French and British supermarkets. Mothers are losing their sons in their perilous quest to get here - and for what? For months in detention and then repatriation. There are so few immigrants from Africa allowed to remain here. The illegal entrants are condemned to a poverty every bit as great as that which they left.
Pauline Scutt, UK

I am appalled that there are so many immigrants coming over to Britain. If they didn't get so much here, maybe they would stop coming. These countries need to be told that they will get nothing and will be turned away. We are already swamped with immigrants, so much so, that Britain is loosing its identity and its great British culture. The government really needs to put a stop to this now, it is out of hand. I fear for the future of this beloved country. Its a mess now and is just getting worse. The immigrants should have been sent back after they had been in the holding place. Most of them were making their way here, this is their final destination as they can arrive here and get given accommodation and benefit. We are way too soft on this issue and one day, this country will regret it. Seeing all those immigrants on their way here on Panorama made me really angry. If they expect me to feel sorry for them then they are barking up the wrong tree. If people stayed in there own countries, the world would be a lot more peaceful and a nicer place. Sure, come for a holiday, but then GO HOME.
Diane, Sittingbourne Kent

This migration issue would be greatly reduced if the Western World would stop allowing the thieving African leaders the opportunity to siphon stolen billions into European banks. Imagine if these thieves do not have the avenue to launder the funds abroad, they would be forced to keep the monies in their countries thereby investing in their own peoples.
Michael, US

Does any one know what happened to the hapless group on the Happy Day. Were they allowed to see the light of day or were they eliminated?
