| ![]() The great euro debate: Politics As on most issues, British politicians are hugely divided over the question of the euro. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw says that the decision is mainly a political one and that the economic advantages of joining the euro can never be guaranteed. Ultimately, Britain must decide whether to let decisions over its economic life be made outside the country. The pressure is certainly mounting on Tony Blair to join, after Labour was elected with a policy of holding a referendum. Europe Minister Peter Hain has warned that Britain could be left out in the cold, as the only member of a 25-country EU to be without the euro. There are many who say "yes" to Europe but "no" to the euro itself. The No Campaign's Dominic Cummings points out that control over our economy would rest with Brussels and Frankfurt and that "the euro is forever - if it's a disaster, we can't leave."
