Archbishop of Cardiff resigns

In a Panorama programme shown in November 2000, reporter Phil Parry revealed how the head of the Catholic Church in Wales, Archbishop John Ward, breached the Church's own guidelines designed to protect children from abuse, prompting calls for him to resign.

The film uncovered disturbing evidence of how the Roman Catholic Church in Wales behaved as paedophile priests abused children and details of the warnings and recommendations that were ignored.

Archbishop John Aloysius Ward resigned on Friday 26 October following a private audience with the Pope.
