Panorama reports on the harrowing story of Afghanistan and the superpowers' involvement in its recent history.

The war-torn and weary country has once again become the focus of the world's attention.

John Simpson, the BBC's World Affairs editor, has visited Afghanistan many times. He reports on what has happened to this devastated country since his first visit in 1989.

Then, one of the two world superpowers, the Soviet Union, was ending its occupation. Now, it is under threat of attack from the remaining superpower, the United States.

Production Team:
Reporter John Simpson
Producers Tom Giles, Caroline Pare & Catherine Quarmby
