John Simpson, the BBC's World Affairs editor, has visited Afghanistan many times. He reports on what has happened to this devastated country since his first visit in 1989.

Then, one of the two world superpowers, the Soviet Union, was ending its occupation. Now, it is under threat of attack from the remaining superpower, the United States.
