When David Cameron was 'the new whizz kid of politics'

In the aftermath of the 2005 general election, Michael Howard, the Conservative party leader at the time, called a leadership election.

David Cameron was the only candidate in the race not to have served as a minister, yet was declared the winner with 68% of votes on 6 December 2005.

Two months before he won that contest Michael Crick profiled the-then relatively unknown Mr Cameron for Newsnight.

Broadcast on 6 October 2005.
