US President Barack Obama has announced that he will increase troops in Afghanistan by 30,000 and begin their withdrawal in July 2011.

Newsnight's Mark Urban reports from Helmand province on how the troop surge has been received positively by US marines already operating there, but big questions remain on the speed of the reinforcements' arrival, and the quality of the Afghan forces set to take over.
