Just before US President Barack Obama announced his decision to increase US troops in Afghanistan by 30,000 he consulted Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate for 2008, an American war hero and a key republican member of the Senate Arms Services Committee.

Newsnight's Gavin Esler asked the senator if Mr Obama had made the right decision.
