Two huge Buddhas towered over Bamiyan in central Afghanistan for centuries, attracting visitors from around the world. But in 2001 they were destroyed by the Taliban leaving only the recesses where they once stood, and a labyrinth of fragile caves.
Lyse Doucet meets Afghanistan's first and only female governor, Habiba Sorabi who is working hard to rebuild Bamiyan province now that the Taliban have left.
