For generations Russia has had the biggest land army in Europe. It didn't necessarily make for the most sophisticated force in the world, but it was big enough to make any potential enemy think twice.
But now the Russians seem to have looked at the professional, volunteer armies of western Europe and north America, and reconsidered.
