Strictly Come Dancing bosses say the voting problems in the 2008 semi-final were due to "exceptional circumstances".
BBC Radio 4's More or Less disagrees.
The TV show's producers realised it was mathematically impossible for a public telephone vote to save Tom Chambers and Camilla Dallerup from the elimination dance-off after the judges' voting put the two other couples in tied first place.
More or Less reporter and former computer programmer, Oliver Hawkins, runs a simulation to show the circumstances were really not that exceptional.
More or Less is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Fridays at 1330 GMT and repeated on Sundays at 2000 GMT. To listen again, visit the More or Less website, or subscribe to the More or Lesspodcast.
