There are 11.4 million mortgages in the UK, with loans worth over £1.2 trillion. Yet the Council of Mortgage Lenders say that annual lending has fallen to its lowest level since 2000. Last year total mortgage lending reached £136.3 billion, a fall of 5% from £143.3 billion in 2009.
