National Savings and Investments NS&I began as the Post Office Savings Bank in 1861 |
National Savings and Investments (NS&I) have damaged the prospects for millions of savers who are struggling to beat inflation. With the Retail Prices Index (RPI) at 5.0 %, NS&I Savings Certificates offering Index-linking plus 1% looked tempting. But this week, NS&I withdrew its Fixed Interest Savings Certificates and Index-linked Savings Certificates from general sale. Interest rates paid on the Direct Saver and Income Bonds were reduced by 0.25% with immediate effect. NS&I Savings Certificates were introduced during the First World War to help fund the war effort and index-linking began in 1975. NS&I currently has almost 27 million customers and over £98bn invested. NS&I sales director John Prout joins the programme. Related information:

Workplace Savings launched Ten funds will be available through the Workplace ISA |
From 1 August 2010 the first 'Workplace ISAs' will be available for employees of three companies. The savings schemes are stocks and shares ISAs and will be managed by Legal and General. They will be offered by Barratt Homes plus two other unnamed firms. The idea is to encourage employees to save more for the long term. Members can ask employers to put contributions directly from their payroll into an ISA or pension, so it is tax efficient. OINK Pupils from St Martin's School in Northwood meet Naga |
Are successful investors born or bred? Does taking risk, following the stock market, judging when to buy and sell belong just in the adult sphere? Or could youngsters have a go? If they do, are they more or less cautious than their parents? To get some answers we meet up with a group of teenagers who are already 'virtual' traders, playing the 'fantasy stock exchange game' run by the children's business newspaper Oink.
