On Wednesday's programme Paul Lewis and guests answered your questions on charitable giving. At this time of year many charities have launched Christmas appeals, cards and gifts in a bid to boost falling donations. Research by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) reveals that despite the economic downturn, 54% of UK adults still donate to a charity each month, but the overall value of donations has fallen by £1.3bn. Cash remains the most popular method of giving but only four in ten donors make use of Gift Aid. Gift Aid is a way for charities to boost the value of money donated by UK taxpayers, by claiming back the basic rate tax paid by the donor. It is estimated that around £750m of Gift Aid goes unclaimed each year. If you are considering making a gift to charity you may have a question for the programme. Perhaps you are wondering which charity to choose? Where can you find information about how charities are run and money is spent? How do you make your donation tax efficient? What is a charity account? Can you donate cash, shares, property, or even a work of art? Or maybe you would like to leave a gift to charity in your will? Whatever your question, the team were ready to help. Paul Lewis was joined by: - John Low CBE, chief executive, Charities Aid Foundation
- Clive Cutbill, consultant, Withers LLP
- Les Hems, charity researcher and director of research, Centre for Social Impact
