Some banks and building societies have been having a bad time of it recently - with disappointing profits and numerous rights issues attempting to improve balance sheets. In plans intended to increase public confidence in the banking system, Chancellor Alistair Darling proposed new measures to protect savers should a bank get into financial difficulty. As part of the plans, the threshold for guaranteed deposits is expected to rise from �35,000 to �50,000.
