Many people are worse off than a year ago due to the global credit crunch, but if you do have any spare money, what is the best way to see a return?

Those who own shares in banks and mortgage lenders may have seen their shares' value fall.

But with banks eager to bring in more money from depositors, savings rates have been steadily rising.
